Commissioner of Nunavut  Awards

The Commissioner of Nunavut has five awards that are given on a regular basis to recognize the contributions of Nunavummiut in the new territory of Nunavut. The awards system recognizes people who have distinguished themselves by contributing to the field of visual arts, acts of bravery, the acquisition of special skills, volunteerism and youth achievement.

Commissioner Awards:

Commissioner's Arts Award

Purpose: To be presented annually to one established Nunavut visual artist who has made a significant contribution to the arts over a significant period of time. The award is a cash prize of $10,000. See Arts Award

Award for Volunteer Service

Purpose: To honour citizens who have given significant personal time and efforts to help non-profit community service organizations or their fellow citizens. The award is in the form of a certificate.

Award for Bravery

Purpose: To honour people in Nunavut who voluntarily risked their lives to an extraordinary degree in saving or attempting to save the lives of other people, or to honour those who voluntarily sacrificied themselves in a heroic manner for the safety of others. The award was begun by the Commissioner of Nunavut to honour dramatic acts of courage in Nunavut that do not gain national recognition. Recipients are presented with a certificate.

Award for Youth Achievement and Accomplishment

Purpose: To recognize outstanding achievement and accomplishment of young Nunavummiut, between the ages of 15 and 24, who volunteer their time to make a positive difference in their communities and territory. The award is a certificate.

Award for Acquisition of Special Skills

Purpose: To encourage and recognize individuals, particularly Elders who through their leadership qualities have passed on traditional knowledge and wisdom combined with their artistic abilities; have been a source of inspiration to the youth and other members of their community. Recipients are presented with a certificate.
