Events and Community Visits

Pangnirtung - February 2007

Commissioner Ann Hanson visited the beautiful hamlet of Pangnirtung on Feb. 27-28 under windy conditions, but sunny skies.

Local MLA Peter Kilabuk, hamlet Mayor Manasa Evic and two RCMP officers were on hand to greet the Commissioner as she spent her day touring various places in the community.

During the afternoon, the Commissioner visited the weaving centre and even tried her hand at weaving, as she spoke with local women who made such incredible work in the community.

In the evening, she handed out Commissioner awards to deserving local citizens with the help of Mr. Kilabuk and Mr. Evic.

The Pangnirtung Rangers were also being recognized for their hard work and commitment to their country.

The ceremonies closed with refreshments and the Commissioner took the opportunity to greet the many people who attended.

The following day, Commissioner Hanson visited students from kindergarten to Grade 5 at Alookie School. The children showcased their good school work and posed for photos with the Commissioner.

Commissioner Hanson then spoke to the Attagoyok High School students, assembled in the school gymnasium.  She spoke about the importance of staying in school. Students cheered when she spoke of the achievements of a local award winner.

The short visit to this Baffin community  was an important one for the Commissioner as she spent her efforts in strengthening the bonds between her office and the residents of Pangnirtung.
