No Commissioner of Nunavut had ever visited the Baffin community of Hall Beach.

On this occasion, Mayor Paul Haulli asked all members of the community to dress in their best and finest clothes. And the community did, impressing Commissioner Ann Meekitjuk Hanson greatly. The community even put a picture of Queen Elizabeth II on stage to honor the Commissioner’s presence.

She was greeted by the RCMP in full serge regalia and a Ranger was assigned to be her aide-de-camp for the full visit, escorting and showing her the community.

The evening was highlighted by a hymn about the bravery of individuals in the high northern community after 7 people were given awards of bravery. An emotional part of the evening occurred when these local heroes met up again with the people they rescued. As everyone in the audience found out, the awards were as important to the rescuer as it was to those they rescued.

All in all, the Commissioner was amazed and impressed by the efforts of community members in Hall Beach.
