The Governor General and her husband began their tour with a welcome by the Commissioner and her husband and Colonel Normand Couturier, Commander of Joint Task Force from the Canadian Forces at the Iqaluit airport,
The Commissioner of Nunavut and her husband, Robert Hanson, welcomed guests for a luncheon on April 18, 2006 at the Commissioner’s Official Residence in Iqaluit welcoming Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean – Governor General of Canada and her husband, Mr. Jean-Daniel Lafond.
Representatives from community social issues organizations and groups attended this important occasion to welcome the newly-appointed Governor General and her husband for their first-ever visit to Nunavut.
Her Excellency and her husband were warm and attentive as guests spoke briefly about their social service organization’s mandate and the work they performed in the community.
Commissioner Hanson presented Her Excellency with a print from Germaine Arnataugumayuk.
At the opening ceremonies of Toonik Tyme Festival at Nakasuk School, they were presented with the Honorary Toonik Statue. The couple also attended a swearing-in ceremony of Deputy Commissioner Helen Maksagak. Then they met with elders at the Elder’s Centre and were in attendance at an official dinner hosted by Premier Paul Okalik before leaving for a visit to Cape Dorset.
