June 25, 2005 – Iqaluit: Governor General Visits
The Commissioner of Nunavut and her husband, Robert Hanson, welcomed guests for a tea on June 20, 2005 at her official residence to welcome Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson – Governor General of Canada and His Excellency John Ralston Saul.
The Premier of Nunavut, MLAs, many distinguished elders in the community and young adults attended for this important occasion in the capital. Some of the Girl Guides of Iqaluit volunteered their time to help out at the event.
The Governor General and her husband toured communities in Nunavut in one of their last visits to the North before retiring from her post. In Iqaluit, Her Excellency spoke warmly and offered a very encouraging tribute to the 11 graduating law students of Akitsiraq Law School during their convocation ceremonies, calling them “pioneering students of law.”
Her Excellency also visited five other communities in the North, including three more in Nunavut – Resolute Bay, Grise Fiord and Pangnirtung. She began her tour in Whitehorse and visited Canadian Forces Base Alert before ending her tour in Iqaluit, marking National Aboriginal Day.
