The Commissioner of Nunavut and her husband, Robert Hanson, hosted their first Levee of her term in office on March 21, welcoming 500 guests for the occasion at Inuksuk High School in Iqaluit.
As usual, a contingent of Cadets and Rangers were in full formation, standing on guard as Commissioner Ann Meekitjuk Hanson walked through the throng of supporters to start the happy occasion.
“Thank you to the committee of Jonah Kelly, Pauloosie Kilabuk, Jimmy Akavak and Marilyn Neily. Celebrating the achievements of Nunavummiut is very important.
“It is essential that we recognize the strength, independence and creativity of people who are committed to building our territory. They are an inspiration to us all,” said Commissioner Hanson.
The Levee is the Commissioner’s chance every year to welcome in the public and she chose spring as the time for this celebration. One of the main events of the evening was to honor heroic efforts in the community.
Commissioner Hanson presented bravery awards to 12 individuals, and five awards to people acquiring special or traditional skills and a youth achievement award to one young person.
A huge 4 ft. X 2.5 ft. cake was baked for the occasion with an official “Thank You” from the Commissioner to the public. Many volunteers helped make the event a success, with a team of approximately 20 graduating students contributing in making this evening a success.
Square-dancing, throat singing and a choir highlighted much of the cultural entertainment this night.
The Commissioner plans to continue the Levee as an annual event.
