Events and Community Visits - Baker Lake

January 15-17, 2007 - Baker Lake community visit

Commissioner Ann Meekitjuk Hanson travelted to the Kivalliq community of Baker Lake for a visit and awards presentation from Jan. 15-17, to kick off the new year.

Enroute to the community, during a scheduled stop in Rankin Inlet, the fire chief picked up the Commissioner and her assistant at the airport and proceeded to give them a tour of the community.

Upon arriving in Baker Lake, MLA David Simailak, the Mayor and six Rangers were there to greet everyone despite the group's arrival being delayed by a few hours.

The Awards presentation and community feast took place on the evening of Jan. 16th.

Commissioner Hanson was welcomed by the Rangers, as she inspected the patrol. She was then invited to join in the feast.

Accompanied by her military Aide de Camp, Commissioner Hanson then proceeded to the stage where two RCMP waited, standing guard in their resplendent red serge uniforms.

The Commisioner presented 20 Commissioner’s Awards to some very emotional recipients as she was warmly received by the community.

Commissioner Hanson also presented a plaque to the 2006 winners of a Heritage Canada Poster contest.

An estimated 600 community members attended the ceremonies. The MLA acted as emcee and the Mayor also helped at the microphone. The Rangers helped to serve the elders, a very nice touch. The PA system worked surprisingly well, as the media filming the ceremony.

During her stay, Commissioner Hanson visited the Forward Operation Location military site,  the Elders home,

the high school, the RCMP detachment. She also toured the city with MLA David Simailak.
