Events and Community Visits - Sanikiluaq

June 2005 - Sanikiluaq: First Community Visit

The Belcher Island community of Sanikiluaq was the first community visit for the Commissioner of Nunavut. It was also the first time a Commissioner of Nunavut had actually visited Sanikiluaq.

When the Commissioner arrived in the community, she was greeted by the RCMP and a full contingent of Rangers, whom she formally inspected.

For the community, it was a big event with Premier Paul Okalik in attendance and Education Minister Ed Picco. Both were there for the opening of a house, built by students, to be used as a daycare. They turned the earth for the next house to be built. Sanikiluaq MLA Peter Kattuk was also on hand for the important ceremony.

The Commissioner was amazed at the many innovative ways the community of Sanikiluaq has worked to preserve Inuit culture and tradition. Community elders still weave baskets and arts and crafts are a very significant part of local activities.

Commissioner Hanson was also impressed with the innovative ideas at the school, which actually looks and feels like a museum of Inuit culture. She toured the student-built house with Najuqsivik director Nellie Meeko and teacher Brian Furgal.

Almost the whole town was on hand to welcome the Commissioner, another highlight for Commissioner Hanson in her first community visit.
